Alarmist rumours coupled with the increased spread

of anti-British propaganda have, in the past week,creat-

frontier and in parts of the Net Territories adjacent

thereto.

The construction of a large matshed at Sham Chun

gave rise to the rumour that a large body of pickets

were coming from Canton. This rumour gave place to

another that the local garrison was being strengthened

by the addition of several hundred troops, but police

enquiries make it almost certain that the purpose of

the matshed is to accomodate part of the local garrison

番攤 at present quartered in the fantan houses, the owners

of which have in consequence lost money and have com-

plained to Canton.

The dissemination of anti-British propaganda took

a new form on the 7th inst., on which date the afternoon

"down" trains from Sham Chun arrived in British Territory

liberally placarded with anti-British posters, and car-

黄埔 toons, in English and Chinese, the work of Whampoa Cadets

at Sham Chun. I informed the Deputy Superintendent of

Police (Kowloon) of this by telephone, also the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Hong Kong). On the 8th inst.,

the first local "down" train was similarly placarded,

also the evening "slow through" from Canton. As a result

the District Officer, North, on the 8th inst., went to

Sham Chun and later Shataukok at which last place he had
